Amusing the Million: Coney Island at the Turn of the Century
by: John F. Kasson
Coney Island: the name still resonates with a sense of racy Brooklyn excitement, the echo of beach-front popular entertainment before World War I. Amusing the Million examines the historical context in which Coney Island made its reputation as an amusement park and shows how America's changing social and economic conditions formed the basis of a new mass culture. Exploring it afresh in this way, John Kasson shows Coney Island no longer as the object of nostalgia but as a harbinger of modernity--and the many photographs, lithographs, engravings, and other reproductions with which he amplifies his text support this lively thesis.

Cheap Amusements: Working Women and Leisure in Turn-of-the-Century New York
by: Kathy Peiss
What did young, independent women do for fun and how did they pay their way into New York City's turn-of-the-century pleasure places? "Cheap Amusements" is a fascinating discussion of young working women whose meager wages often fell short of bare subsistence and rarely allowed for entertainment expenses. Kathy Peiss follows working women into saloons, dance halls, Coney Island amusement parks, social clubs, and nickelodeons to explore the culture of these young women between 1880 and 1920 as expressed in leisure activities.

Going Out: The Rise and Fall of Public Amusements
by: David Nasaw
David Nasaw has written a sparkling social history of twentieth-century show business and of the new American public that assembled in the city's pleasure palaces, parks, theaters, nickelodeons, world's fair midways, and dance halls.
The new amusement centers welcomed women, men, and children, native-born and immigrant, rich, poor and middling. Only African Americans were excluded or segregated in the audience, though they were overrepresented in parodic form on stage. This stigmatization of the African American, Nasaw argues, was the glue that cemented an otherwise disparate audience, muting social distinctions among "whites," and creating a common national culture.

Luna Park Crash: Cable snaps on rocket ride
10 lives were left hanging by a thread - literally - when an extreme thrill ride on a rocket-like attraction almost ended in tragedy. Visitors to one of St. Petersburg's amusement parks were in for a nasty shock as a cable snapped on the ride, leaving them suspended in mid-air 70 meters above the ground. Luckily, rescue teams made it to the spot just in time to free the stranded passengers. This isn't the first safety scare at the amusement park. Two years ago, a 12-year old girl suffered serious injuries after a trampoline accident - also involving a snapped cable.
